This sandwich gets a crunchy finish with chips embedded into the bread. I use very special potato chips that were sent to me from Pennsylvania by my dear friend, MP. But if you can't find Utz®, your favorite chip will work just fine. Serve with more chips and pickles.

Tips:

  • To ensure a smooth and creamy béchamel sauce, melt the butter over medium heat and whisk in the flour until it forms a smooth paste. Cook this mixture, known as a roux, for a few minutes before gradually whisking in the milk. Stir constantly until the sauce thickens and reaches a velvety consistency.
  • For a flavorful tuna salad, use a combination of canned tuna, mayonnaise, diced celery, red onion, and chopped fresh dill. For a richer taste, add a dollop of Dijon mustard and some grated Parmesan cheese.
  • To achieve a perfectly melted and gooey center, assemble the tuna melt sandwich with two slices of bread, tuna salad, tomato slices, and a generous layer of shredded cheese. Place the sandwich on a greased skillet or griddle and cook over medium heat until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Alternatively, you can bake the tuna melt sandwich in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes. Keep an eye on the sandwich to prevent the bread from over-browning.

Conclusion:

Embark on a culinary journey with this versatile tuna melt sandwich, a delightful fusion of flavors and textures. Experiment with different types of bread, cheeses, and toppings to create your perfect combination. Whether you prefer a classic tuna salad filling or a creative twist with additional ingredients, this classic comfort food will surely satisfy your taste buds.
