Meatloaf can be an easy meal to make, but it can be difficult to cook it perfectly. If you are looking for a way to cook meatloaf that is both flavorful and juicy, cooking it on the grill is a great option. Grilling meatloaf allows you to use indirect heat, which helps to prevent the meatloaf from drying out. Additionally, the smoky flavor that the grill imparts to the meatloaf adds an extra layer of flavor that you won't get from cooking it in the oven. In this article, we will provide you with a few tips for cooking meatloaf on the grill, as well as some of our favorite recipes.

Here are our top 9 tried and tested recipes!

MEATLOAF ON THE GRILL

Meatloaf on the Grill image

We don't eat beef so we use ground pork and ground turkey for this, but you could use any ground meat you'd like. This is a fun way to cook a meatloaf that is great for a hot summer day when you don't want to turn on the oven. We use a charcoal grill. I usually don't measure the seasoning, so go by your own tastes.

"WHAT YOU GOT" MEATLOAF ON THE GRILL

Provided by Michael Symon : Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Time 1h20m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 20

1 cup ketchup
1/3 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon apple cider or sherry vinegar
Freshly ground black pepper
2 pounds ground meat (I'm using beef)
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 cup peeled and grated onion (I'm using yellow)
1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped
1 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon spice mix (I'm using Old Bay)
5 shakes Worcestershire sauce
2 large eggs, beaten
1 head roasted garlic, mashed, recipe follows
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
8 ounces smoked sausage (I'm using kielbasa), optional
3 heads garlic
3 teaspoons olive oil

Steps:

  • For the glaze: In a medium bowl, add the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Whisk to combine and set aside.
  • For the meatloaf: Preheat the oven or grill to 375 degrees F. If using a gas grill, set to medium heat on one side and low on the other side. If using a charcoal grill, bank medium-hot coals on one side of the grill.
  • Prepare your pan: Line a baking sheet with foil if using an oven. If grilling, gather a sturdy grilling tray, disposable foil pan or some sheets of foil.
  • In a large bowl, add the meat, breadcrumbs, onion, parsley, cayenne, paprika, Old Bay, Worcestershire sauce, eggs and garlic. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and season well with salt and pepper.
  • Put the meat mixture on the prepared tray. Form the meat into a loaf around the kielbasa, if using, so the sausage is sealed inside. Spread the glaze over the top. Bake in the oven or on the cooler side of the grill, covered, until cooked through and the glaze is sticky, about 1 hour.
  • Serve with potatoes or a side salad or use on a sandwich.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with foil.
  • Remove the outer papery skin from the garlic, then cut 1/4 inch off the top of each head. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of olive oil over each head of garlic, then wrap each head in foil. Seal the foil packets and transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Roast until completely soft and caramelized, about 1 hour. Allow to cool slightly.
  • When cool enough to handle, squeeze the garlic cloves from the skin into a medium bowl and mash with a fork into a paste.

MEATLOAF ON THE GRILL

Meatloaf on the Grill image

A great way to cook meatloaf when its too hot in the summer to turn on the oven. Great with a side of grilled veggies.

Provided by alijen

Categories     Pork

Time 35m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb ground pork
1 lb ground turkey
2 eggs
2 tablespoons dried breadcrumbs
8 ounces sliced fresh mushrooms
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon basil
1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat and outdoor grill for medium heat.
  • In a large bowl, using your hands, mix together all ingredients.
  • Be careful not to over-mix as the meatloaf will be a little tough.
  • Pat evenly into a 9 inch pie plate.
  • Place the pie plate onto a cookie sheet and then place onto the grill grate.
  • Close the lid, and cook for 30-45 minutes, until no longer pink.
  • (The meat cooks faster on the grill than in the oven.).

Tips:

  • Choose the right meat. A combination of ground beef and ground pork is a classic choice for meatloaf, but you can also use ground turkey, chicken, or lamb. If you're using a leaner meat, add some extra fat, such as bacon or butter, to keep the meatloaf moist.
  • Season the meatloaf well. Use a variety of herbs and spices to flavor the meatloaf, such as garlic, onion, salt, and pepper. You can also add other ingredients, such as bread crumbs, eggs, and ketchup, to help bind the meatloaf together and add flavor.
  • Don't overmix the meatloaf. Overmixing the meatloaf can make it tough. Mix the ingredients just until they are combined.
  • Shape the meatloaf into a loaf. Place the meatloaf mixture into a loaf pan or shape it into a loaf by hand. Make sure the meatloaf is evenly shaped so that it cooks evenly.
  • Cook the meatloaf on a grill. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the meatloaf on the grill and cook it for about 1 hour, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the center of the meatloaf reads 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the meatloaf rest before slicing. Let the meatloaf rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. This will help the juices redistribute throughout the meatloaf and make it easier to slice.

Conclusion:

Meatloaf is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. By following these tips, you can make a delicious meatloaf that will be the star of your next meal.
