Mexican aguas frescas, or "fresh waters," made from all kinds of fresh fruit, flowers, or herbs, are a great way to beat the heat. This cantaloupe version gets additional vim from a splash of club soda.

Yield Makes 8 drinks

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (4-pound) cantaloupe, seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes (about 8 cups)
1 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon sugar
1 quart chilled club soda or seltzer
Garnish: lime wedges, honeydew melon slices

Steps:

  • Purée cantaloupe in batches with water in a blender. Transfer to a colander lined with a kitchen towel (not terry cloth) or fine cheesecloth set over a deep bowl and let drain 1 hour. Gather ends of towel and very gently squeeze any remaining juice from melon, then discard solids.
  • Stir in lime juice, sugar, and 1/4 tsp salt and chill 1 hour.
  • Divide among 8 (10-ounces) glasses and top off with club soda.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe melons: The key to making a great melon cooler is to start with ripe, juicy melons. Look for melons that are heavy for their size and have a sweet smell. Avoid melons that have bruises or soft spots.
  • Chill the melons before blending: Chilling the melons before blending will help to make the coolers even more refreshing. You can chill the melons in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
  • Use a high-powered blender: A high-powered blender will help to create a smooth and creamy cooler. If you don't have a high-powered blender, you can use a regular blender, but you may need to blend the coolers for a longer period of time.
  • Add other ingredients to taste: You can add other ingredients to your melon coolers to taste, such as honey, sugar, or lime juice. You can also add frozen fruit or yogurt to make a smoothie-like cooler.
  • Garnish with fresh mint or lime wedges: Garnish your melon coolers with fresh mint or lime wedges for a refreshing and flavorful touch.

Conclusion:

Melon coolers are a delicious and refreshing way to enjoy the summer heat. They are easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a refreshing and flavorful cooler that will help you beat the heat and stay hydrated.
