How to make your own neti pot saline solution mix (for sinus cleansing). This recipe makes 60 doses, equivalent to a box of mixture you might purchase at the drugstore. I determined the proper ingredients, ratios, and dose size from saline solution mix sold over-the-counter. I only recommend using this recipe if you're familiar with how neti pots work. Non-iodized salt is the normal ingredient for neti pot solution - the additional baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) seems to help sooth nasal passages. If you're uncertain about the baking soda, omit it and just use the salt. Simple, yet effective.

Time 15m

Yield 60 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

1 1/4 cups sea salt or 1 1/4 cups kosher salt
6 tablespoons baking soda

Steps:

  • Combine the salt and baking soda in a mortar and pestle.
  • Grind the mixture until very fine (the finer the grain, the faster it will dissolve).
  • Use approximately 1/2 tsp per 8 oz of tepid water.

Tips for Using a Neti Pot:

  • Use distilled, sterile, or boiled water. Tap water may contain bacteria or other contaminants that could irritate your nasal passages.
  • Use the correct amount of salt. Too much salt can irritate your nasal passages, while too little salt will not be effective in clearing congestion.
  • Start with a low pressure setting. You can gradually increase the pressure as needed.
  • Tilt your head to one side and insert the spout of the neti pot into your nostril. Breathe through your mouth while you slowly pour the saline solution into your nostril.
  • Allow the saline solution to flow through your nasal cavity and out the other nostril. Do not swallow the saline solution.
  • Repeat the process with the other nostril.
  • Rinse your neti pot thoroughly after each use.

Conclusion:

Using a neti pot is a safe and effective way to relieve nasal congestion and other sinus problems. It is important to use a neti pot correctly in order to avoid irritation or infection. By following these tips, you can safely and effectively use a neti pot to improve your nasal health.
