THE BEST TUNA SALAD

The Best Tuna Salad image

While we love many kinds of tuna salad, this classic version tops them all. The crispy celery and red onion give add zest and crunch, while mayonnaise and touch of mustard marry it all together. The lemon juice is optional as it's not traditional, but we strongly recommend it to brighten up the flavors of the final dish.

My husband says this tuna salad is even better than his mother's. Not too pickly tasting, mild with a nice blend of flavor. You can add more mayo for a creamier salad.

MY MOTHER'S TUNA SALAD

My Mother's Tuna Salad image

This is Julia Reed's favorite tuna salad, the one she subsisted on for years as a child, eaten with a fork straight out of a container in her mother's refrigerator. It's an unfussy thing that is exactly suited to be layered between two pieces of white bread - toasted, if you must - and then eaten at the kitchen table, or, after summer ends, at the lunchroom table. The ingredients are simple and easily acquired, and be sure to use real mayonnaise.

Categories     Egg     Fish

Number Of Ingredients 10

5 hard-cooked eggs, chopped
4 cans (6 ounce) tuna, drained
1 stalk celery, chopped
1/2 cup sweet onion, chopped
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon honey mustard
2 tablespoons dill pickle relish
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt

Steps:

  • Place the tuna, hard-cooked egg, celery and onion in a large bowl.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, honey mustard, relish, celery seed, pepper and seasoned salt. Pour over the ingredients in the other bowl, and stir gently to coat.
  • Serve immediately at room temperature, or chill until ready to serve.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality tuna: Opt for tuna that is packed in water or olive oil, as it retains more of its natural flavor and nutrients compared to tuna packed in oil.
  • Use mayonnaise sparingly: Mayonnaise can add richness and creaminess to tuna salad, but too much can overpower the other ingredients. Aim for a balance of flavors by using just enough mayonnaise to bind the salad together.
  • Add a variety of vegetables: Vegetables add texture, flavor, and nutrients to tuna salad. Try adding diced celery, onion, bell peppers, or cucumbers. For a crunchy twist, consider adding chopped nuts or seeds.
  • Use fresh herbs for extra flavor: Fresh herbs like dill, parsley, or chives can brighten up the flavors in tuna salad. Chop them finely and sprinkle them over the salad before serving.
  • Season to taste: Don't forget to season your tuna salad with salt and pepper to enhance the flavors. You can also add a squeeze of lemon juice or a dash of Dijon mustard for a tangy kick.

Tuna salad is a versatile and delicious dish that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.
