2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 large egg
2 tablespoons whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup old-fashioned oats
Red colored sugar, optional

Steps:

  • Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Whisk together the egg, milk and vanilla; add to butter mixture. Stir in flour mixture; stir in oats. , On a floured surface, roll the dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut into heart shapes; place on ungreased baking sheets. Decorate with red sugar if desired. Bake at 375° for 15-18 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.

1/4 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup packed light-brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 cup dried dates, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:
