OATMEAL DINNER ROLLS

Oatmeal Dinner Rolls image

These are great and simple Rolls from Southern Living Magazine. I do not claim to be a baker at all, but if I can make these anyone can and I always get rave reviews. The dough can also be used for yummy cinnamon rolls as well.Update: At one point I changed the recipe to canola oil instead of butter and added half whole wheat. Then a friend of mine made it and she substituted applesauce for the butter and she said it turned out great. I made it tonight with the applesauce and she was spot on!

Time 2h30m

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 cups boiling water
2 cups rolled oats
1 ⅓ cups brown sugar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
⅔ cup lukewarm water
4 teaspoons salt
8 cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed
1 cup butter, softened
3 tablespoons honey
⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Stir boiling water and oats together in a bowl; set aside to thicken and cool, 10 to 15 minutes. Stir brown sugar and vegetable oil into oat mixture.
  • Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water in a bowl. Let stand until the yeast softens and begins to form a creamy foam, about 5 minutes. Stir yeast mixture and salt into oat mixture. Beat flour, 1 cup at a time, into oat mixture until dough is soft. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes.
  • Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a damp towel; let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  • Punch dough down and form into rolls; arrange on baking sheets. Let rise again until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Bake rolls in the preheated oven until lightly browned, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Beat butter, honey, and cinnamon together in a bowl using an electric mixer until creamy and smooth. Serve honey butter with rolls.

Tips:

  • Use warm milk or water. This will help activate the yeast and get your rolls rising properly.
  • Be patient when letting your dough rise. It may take up to 2 hours for the dough to double in size. Don't rush it, or your rolls will be dense and not as fluffy.
  • Punch down the dough before shaping it into rolls. This will help release any air bubbles and make your rolls more evenly textured.
  • Bake your rolls in a preheated oven. This will help them rise evenly and prevent them from being doughy in the middle.
  • Let your rolls cool slightly before serving. This will help them hold their shape and make them easier to handle.

Conclusion:

Oatmeal yeast rolls are a delicious and versatile bread that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They're easy to make and can be customized to your own liking. Whether you prefer them plain, with butter and jam, or even as a sandwich bread, oatmeal yeast rolls are sure to be a hit. So next time you're looking for a tasty and satisfying bread recipe, give these oatmeal yeast rolls a try. You won't be disappointed!
