Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter two 8-by-2-inch round cake pans; dust with flour, tapping out excess. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk in eggs, buttermilk, water, vanilla, and oil.
- Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake until tops spring back when lightly pressed, about 30 minutes. Transfer pans to a wire rack; let cool 15 minutes. Invert cakes onto rack, remove parchment, then turn top-side up (to prevent sticky tops from sticking to rack); let cool completely.
- Spread 1 1/2 cups frosting over top of one cooled cake layer. Top with remaining layer. Spread a thin coat (about 1 cup) of frosting over top and sides of cake to create a "crumb coat." Refrigerate about 20 minutes, then frost top and sides of cake with remaining frosting. (For a more refined look, trim domed top of cake flat before layering and frosting.)

ONE BOWL CHOCOLATE BIRTHDAY CAKE
This recipe calls for mixing all the ingredients together into a bowl, then dividing the batter into cake pans, then baking them. How easy is that?
Provided by Martha Stewart

Yield Makes three 8-inch round layers, two 9-inch round layers, one 9-by-13 inch sheet or 3 to 4 dozen cupcakes
Number Of Ingredients 12
Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter round or square cake pans, and line bottoms with parchment; butter parchment, and dust with cocoa.
- Into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, sift cocoa, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. With the mixer on low, stir in eggs, 1 1/2 cups warm water, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla until smooth, about 3 minutes.
- Divide batter among prepared pans. Bake, rotating once, until tester inserted in center comes out clean, 35 to 45 minutes for 8-inch layers, depending on amount of batter.
- Let cakes cool in pans on a wire rack for 20 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely, right side up on rack.
Tips:
- Use high-quality cocoa powder: The quality of the cocoa powder you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your cake. Look for a cocoa powder that is labeled "unsweetened" and has a deep, rich color.
- Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter can make the cake tough. Mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined.
- Bake the cake at the right temperature: The cake should be baked at a moderate temperature (350 degrees Fahrenheit) so that it has time to rise and cook through evenly.
- Let the cake cool completely before frosting it: This will help to prevent the frosting from melting.
- Use a variety of toppings: You can top your chocolate cake with a variety of things, such as chocolate ganache, whipped cream, or fresh berries.
Conclusion:
This one-bowl chocolate cake is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With its rich, chocolatey flavor and moist texture, this cake is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it. So next time you're craving a chocolate fix, give this recipe a try!
