Here's how we do it: open-faced with crusty toasted bread, melty cheese, capers, cornichons, Dijon mustard, and plenty of seasoning. On a chilly fall day, nothing tastes better.

OPEN FACE TUNA MELT SANDWICH

These have become a quick dinner staple. They are sooo good, and comes together in minutes. You can change the type of cheese, but I've found that something with a stronger flavor that melts well, is best. The type of bread I use is called Saloio and is similar to Ciabbata (Saloio is a portuguese bread readily available at our supermarket bakery).

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Fresh tuna, ripe tomatoes, and a flavorful cheese are essential.
  • Don't overcook the tuna. It should be cooked through but still moist and flaky.
  • Use a sturdy bread that can hold up to the juicy tuna mixture. A thick-sliced sourdough or a hearty Italian bread are good choices.
  • Toast the bread before assembling the sandwiches. This will help to prevent the bread from getting soggy.
  • Add a layer of mayonnaise or aioli to the bread before adding the tuna mixture. This will help to keep the sandwich moist and flavorful.
  • Top the sandwiches with a layer of cheese before broiling. This will help to melt the cheese and create a golden brown crust.
  • Serve the sandwiches immediately while the cheese is still melted and gooey.

Conclusion:

Open-face Italian tuna melts are a quick and easy meal that is perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual lunch. They are also a great way to use up leftover tuna. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a delicious and satisfying sandwich that the whole family will enjoy.
