Steps:
- 1. chop orange slice candy, add chopped dates and nuts stir in 1/2 cup flour (this keeps the ingredients from sticking together and sinking to the bottom of the pan)
- 2. Preheat oven to 300 degrees, cream sugar, eggs, & butter together then add buttermilk and mix just until blended, add flour 1 cup at a time mixing well on low speed until all flour is incorporated then add candy, date and nut mixture folding into batter until well mixed. this is a thick batter. Bake in a well greased bunt pan or in loaf pans (bake time is shorter in loaf pans)
- 3. After removing cake from oven while still hot mix powdered sugar and orange juice together and pour over cake, cover and place in refridgerator for 24 hrs. If baked in bunt pan after 24 hrs remove from fridge and invert on a cake plate at room temp until cake comes loose from bunt pan. Do not try to force this process your cake will break into pieces.
Tips:
- Use fresh oranges. This will give your cake the best flavor.
- Grate the orange zest finely. This will help to release the oils and flavor from the zest.
- Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. This will help to incorporate air into the cake, making it light and airy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time. This will help to prevent the cake from curdling.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients gradually, alternating with the milk. This will help to prevent the cake from becoming too dry.
- Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. This will ensure that the cake is cooked through.
- Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting. This will help to prevent the frosting from melting.
- Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
