1 teaspoon fennel seeds or anise seeds
4 navel oranges
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lime zest

  • In a medium saucepan, bring the water, sugar, and fennel seeds to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium, and cook until liquid reduces to about 1/2 cup, about 25 minutes.
  • Using a sharp paring knife, peel the oranges, removing as much of the bitter white pith as possible. Slice oranges crosswise into rounds 1/4- to-1/2-inch-thick, and place in a large bowl.
  • Strain the syrup over the orange slices. Stir in lime juice, and zest. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until chilled, at least 30 minutes and up to overnight. Serve orange slices drizzled with syrup.

Transfer cardamom and reserved orange peel strip to heavy medium saucepan. Add 3 cups water, sugar, lemon peel, and cinnamon stick; bring to boil. Yield Makes 1 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Combine the sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil; stir until sugar has dissolved. Combine juice and cornstarch in a bowl; pour into sugar syrup. Simmer gently until thick, 6 to 8 minutes. Add butter; stir until it melts. Serve warm.

Tips for Making the Best Oranges in syrup:

  • Choose the Right Oranges: Select firm, juicy oranges with smooth skin. Avoid oranges with blemishes or soft spots.
  • Zest the Oranges Carefully: Use a fine grater or zester to remove only the outermost layer of the orange peel, avoiding the bitter white pith.
  • Use Fresh Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice adds a vibrant flavor to the syrup. If using store-bought juice, choose a high-quality variety with no added sugars.
  • Simmer the Oranges: Bring the syrup to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer gently until the oranges are tender and translucent. This process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and ripeness of the oranges.
  • Cool and Serve: Allow the oranges to cool completely in the syrup before serving. This helps them absorb the flavor of the syrup and prevents them from falling apart.

Conclusion:

By following these tips and experimenting with different flavors and ingredients, you can create a delicious and memorable dessert that is sure to impress your friends and family.
