This recipe also works well with pork strips too. You can marinade for more than 1 hour if desired. This recipe may be doubled. To save time purchase the pre-cut stir-fry beef strips in the meat department.

QUICK SKILLET SIRLOIN STRIPS WITH BBQ ONION SAUCE

Quick Skillet Sirloin Strips With BBQ Onion Sauce image

This is a quick and easy recipe ideal for a busy week night. Sirloin has a great beefy flavor, particularly when it isn't overcooked. Use your favorite barbecue sauce to give it either a sweet or tangy or spicy flavor from the sauce. I like to serve it with my golden garlic mashed potatoes recipe. The recipe is very loosely based on one found in the America's Test Kitchen Fast & Fresh Recipe Card Collection.

Time 45m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 lbs sirloin, cut into thin strips (may use pre-sliced stir-fry beef)
1 large sweet onion, halved and sliced thin
kosher salt
fresh ground pepper
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Dry the sirloin strips with paper towels and season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside.
  • Heat a tbsp oil in a large non-stick skillet on medium high heat. Add sliced onion, season with salt, and cover, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly browned (about 5 min). Transfer the onions to a plate and set aside.
  • Add a tbsp oil to the empty pan and heat. Add half of the steak and spread out in a single layer, trying not to over crowd the beef. Let cook on one side for 3 - 5 minutes until brown, and using tongs, turn each strip to brown the other side for 3 - 5 minutes. Transfer the browned steak strips to a platter, and cover loosely with foil to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining steak strips, adding them to the same platter of cooked steak strips when finished.
  • Add the broth, barbecue sauce and browned onions into the empty pan. Simmer on medium-low heat until the sauce thickens slightly (about 5 minutes). Add butter, stirring it into the sauce while it melts. Taste sauce and season with salt and pepper if necessary. Pour sauce over steak on platter and serve hot.

Time 15m

Yield 5 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

10 wonton wrappers
2 ounces peanut oil

Steps:

  • Cut wonton wrappers into strips about 1/2-inch by 3 inches long. NOTE: egg roll wrappers can be used, but cut them in half first before cutting the strips.
  • NOTE: canola oil, vegetable oil, or corn oil can be used if desired. Peanut oil is recommended due to the high flash point (since you will probably dribble some oil as you scoop out the fried wontons).
  • Heat 1 inch of oil in a deep pan on medium-high to 360 degrees. If you don't have a thermometer, try dropping a single strip in to see if it crisps up quickly. If it does, then it's hot enough.
  • NOTE: the strips cook very quickly. If the oil is hot enough, they will be done in as soon as 15 seconds, so don't walk away!
  • Fry the strips in batches, spreading them out so they don't stick. Flip them over with a slotted spoon if both sides aren't browning evenly. Remove when they turn golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towel-lined plate.
  • Sprinkle with salt if desired. This is absolutely NOT a traditional way to prepare the wonton strips, but it's tasty.

Tips:

  • Use thin strips of beef: This will help them cook quickly and evenly.
  • Tenderize the beef: You can do this by using a meat mallet or by marinating the beef in a mixture of soy sauce, rice wine, and cornstarch.
  • Cook the beef in a hot skillet: This will help to sear the beef and lock in the juices.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: If you do, the beef will steam instead of sear.
  • Cook the beef in batches if necessary: If you have a lot of beef to cook, you may need to do this in batches.
  • Add the sauce to the skillet: Once the beef is cooked, add the sauce and stir to coat.
  • Serve the beef immediately: This dish is best served fresh and hot.

Conclusion:

Sweet skillet beef strips are a quick and easy weeknight meal that is sure to please the whole family. The beef is tender and flavorful, and the sauce is sweet and tangy. This dish can be served over rice, noodles, or vegetables. It is also a great option for a party or potluck.
