Tips:

  • Soak the barley overnight or for at least 4 hours before cooking. This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the barley more tender.
  • Use a good quality ham. A smoked ham will add a lot of flavor to the stew.
  • Don't overcrowd the slow cooker. If you add too much food, it will take longer to cook and the food may not cook evenly.
  • Add the vegetables towards the end of the cooking time. This will help to prevent them from becoming overcooked and mushy.
  • Serve the stew with a side of cornbread or rice.

Conclusion:

Red beans and barley with ham is a hearty and flavorful stew that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be cooked in a slow cooker, making it a great option for busy weeknights. With its combination of red beans, barley, ham, and vegetables, this stew is a nutritional powerhouse that is sure to please everyone at the table.
