ROUND STEAK SAUERBRATEN

Round Steak Sauerbraten image

This isn't traditional Sauerbraten, but a great, easy substitute using round steak. My mom made this dish when I was a kid. I started making it when my kids were young, and we all love it!! Try serving over buttered noodles. If your crew is really hungry, then double the recipe. The single recipe is never enough for my family of four.

I happened upon a BOGO for bottom round steaks and had absolutely no idea what to do with them. The first package was basically a disaster not knowing that this cut needed more than just a marinade. So, after doing a bit of research on the cut, I found I could adapt this to a dish much like Mom used to make. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of meat: Round steak is a tough cut of meat, so it needs to be cooked slowly and gently to tenderize it. Using a Dutch oven or slow cooker is a great way to achieve this.
  • Marinate the meat: Marinating the meat in a flavorful mixture of vinegar, spices, and herbs will help to tenderize it and infuse it with flavor.
  • Brown the meat before braising: Browning the meat before braising will help to develop its flavor and create a rich, flavorful sauce.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: Feel free to add other vegetables to the braising liquid, such as carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes. This will add flavor and nutrients to the dish.
  • Thicken the sauce: If you want a thicker sauce, you can add a cornstarch or flour slurry to the braising liquid. Be sure to simmer the sauce for a few minutes after adding the slurry to allow it to thicken.

Conclusion:

Round steak sauerbraten is a delicious and hearty dish that is perfect for a special occasion or a weeknight meal. By following these tips, you can create a flavorful and tender sauerbraten that your family and friends will love.
