Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 2

2 8 oz cans refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
1 lb ground jim dean sausage mild for kids, hot for adults, or sage if you prefer

Steps:

  • 1. Separate 1 can of dough and form into 4 rectangles. Firmly press perforations to seal. Take the uncooked sausage and cut into 8 chunks. Using 4 chunks of the sausage, spread thin layer on each rectangle. Starting at the short end, roll each rectangle tightly into a cylinder. Repeat with other can of dough and sausage. Place on a plate, cover with plastic wrap and chill until firm, about 30 minutes. Cut each roll into 4 slices. Preheat oven to 375. Place sausage swirls 1/2 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 18-20 minutes.
  • 2. We love to dip them in mustard! Yummy!

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
2 Tbsp baking powder
2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 cup oil
2/3 cup milk
2 lb hot sausage

Steps:

  • Combine dry ingredients. Stir in oil until mixture resembles course crumbs. Add milk and stir until mixture forms a ball. Roll half of dough into 10"x18" rectangle. Spread with 1 lb sausage. Roll up as for jelly roll. Wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap. Repeat with remaining dough and sausage. Chill for several hours. (I sometimes will freeze the dough at this point if I'm making them ahead. Or partially freeze it to make the roll easier to cut.) Slice rolls into 1/4" rounds. Bake on ungreased baking sheet in 350 degree oven for 15 minutes, until slightly browned. Serve warm, but not hot.

Tips:

  • For a golden crust and flaky pastry, use cold butter and work it into the dough quickly. Avoid overworking the dough, as this can result in a tough pastry.
  • If the dough becomes too sticky, chill it for 30 minutes before continuing.
  • Use a sharp knife to score the tops of the sausage swirls before baking. This will help them rise evenly and create a nice crust.
  • Bake the sausage swirls until they are golden brown and cooked through. The filling should be hot and bubbly.
  • Serve the sausage swirls warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

Sausage swirls are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or snack. They are perfect for parties or potlucks, and they can also be served as a main course. With a variety of filling options to choose from, there is sure to be a sausage swirl that everyone will enjoy. So next time you are looking for a tasty and crowd-pleasing dish, give sausage swirls a try.
