SAVORY SEASONING

Savory Seasoning image

This recipe has been such a staple in my kitchen that I think of it as one would with salt and pepper. I use to use it exclusively on meats, but now that I rarely eat meat, I thought I would try on other things...and it was wonderful. The original recipe came from a writer with the first name of Francine..so long ago that I forgot the last name.

Time 20m

Yield 1/2 cup

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 tablespoons ground ginger
3 tablespoons dried oregano
1 tablespoon ground cloves
4 tablespoons onion powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon chili powder (may use more)
1 1/2-2 teaspoons nutmeg, fresh grated
2 tablespoons dried sage, finely crushed
1 teaspoon dried thyme, finely crushed
1 teaspoon sea salt (optional)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper, finely ground (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine everything together in a container with a tight lid. I prefer a glass jar as I feel the potency remains longer then in plastic.
  • Shake or stir well. Store in cool area. Do Not Refrigerate!
  • This tends to settle, so stir well before using.
  • I love using this when I'm saute onions for the base of a soup or stew -- just about any kind except lamb.
  • It also makes a different rub for chicken.

Time 5m

Yield 2/3 cup

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 tablespoons garlic powder
3 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a jar with a lid.
  • Tightly close the lid and shake very well to combine all ingredients.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of spices and herbs: Experiment with different flavors to create a unique and delicious blend. Some popular choices include garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cumin, oregano, and basil.
  • Adjust the proportions of spices and herbs to suit your taste: There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to how much of each spice or herb to use. Start with a small amount and add more to taste.
  • Toast your spices and herbs before using them: This will help to release their flavors and make them more fragrant.
  • Use fresh spices and herbs whenever possible: Fresh spices and herbs have a more intense flavor than dried ones.
  • Store your spices and herbs in a cool, dark place: This will help to preserve their flavor and prevent them from losing their potency.

Conclusion:

With a little experimentation, you can create your own signature savory seasoning blend that you can use to add flavor to all your favorite dishes. So get creative and have fun!
