FROSTING:
8 ounces (2 sticks) butter, room temperature
2 cups cake flour
3/4 cup confectioners sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup shortening
5 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Food coloring of your choice

Steps:

Cut into shapes, or you can cut into rectangles, like shortbread. Place on cookie sheet and bake for about 20 minutes. Check after 15 minutes. They are done when they are lightly browned. Don't over bake. You can frost with a basic sugar frosting. Combine the sugar, shortening milk and vanilla with a mixer. Separate the frosting into multiple bowls and add food coloring of your choice. Decorate your cookies!

Tips:

  • Use high-quality butter: The quality of the butter you use will greatly affect the taste of your cookies. Look for a butter that is at least 82% butterfat.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy: This will help to incorporate air into the dough, making the cookies light and airy.
  • Chill the dough before baking: This will help to prevent the cookies from spreading too much in the oven.
  • Bake the cookies until the edges are just beginning to brown: Overbaking will make the cookies dry and crumbly.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely: This will help to prevent the cookies from breaking.
