SIRLOIN STEAK CASSEROLE

Sirloin Steak Casserole image

This is similar enough to swiss steak to be comforting, but different enough not to be boring. I often substitute freshly minced garlic for the garlic powder. Serve with mashed potatoes and a green vegetable; I prefer green beans with this.

Categories     Vegetable

Time 1h50m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon mustard powder
2 lbs sirloin steaks
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups sliced mushrooms
1 onion, peeled and sliced
1 cup red wine
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 (19 ounce) can tomatoes, undrained

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325F degrees.
  • In a small dish, combine flour, salt, pepper and dry mustard; transfer to a plastic bag.
  • Cut steak into strips, larger than for stir fry, and place in a large bowl; pour just enough of the red wine onto meat to moisten; reserve remaining wine.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil.
  • Shake steak strips in flour mixture, then brown floured meat in hot oil; place browned strips in a large casserole dish; you may need more oil to brown all your beef.
  • When done, pour any meat juice/red wine left in bowl steak was in onto browned meat.
  • Add remaining ingredients, including reserved red wine, to casserole and stir to combine.
  • Cover tightly and bake for 1-1/2 to 2 hours, or until steak is tender.

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 1/2 pounds sirloin steak, 1 to 1 1/4-inches thick
2 teaspoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cook steak in this position for 5 minutes. Flip steak and cook for another 5 minutes. Move rack with steak to top position in oven, moving rack with foil and drippings just underneath, and cook for 3 minutes. Flip 1 last time and cook for another 3 minutes. Transfer steak to wire rack and rest for 3 to 5 minutes. The above times are for medium doneness. Adjust cooking times up or down as desired.

SIMPLE SIRLOIN STEAK

Simple sirloin steak image

Master the art of cooking the perfect sirloin steak for truly tender meat and you'll never look back. Serve with chunky chips and salad for a weekend treat

Provided by Barney Desmazery

Categories     Dinner, Main course, Treat

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 sirloin steaks, each about 200g and 2cm thick
1 tbsp sunflower oil
1 tbsp butter
1 garlic clove, left whole but bashed once
sprig of thyme or rosemary (optional)

Steps:

  • Remove the steaks from the fridge about 30 mins before you plan to cook, so they're closer to room temperature. Pat the steaks dry with kitchen paper, and season with salt and pepper. Take a heavy-based frying pan that will comfortably fit both steaks, add the oil and heat over a high flame.
  • When the oil is shimmering, turn the heat down to medium-high and add the butter. Once it's sizzling, carefully lay the steaks in the pan, tucking the garlic and herbs in at the sides.
  • With a pair of tongs, sear and turn the steaks every 30 secs to 1 min so they get a nice brown crust. As a rough guide, each steak will take 3 mins in total for rare, 4-5 mins in total for medium and 7-8 mins for well done. If you have a digital cooking thermometer, the middle of the steak should be 50C for rare, 60C for medium and 70C for well done.

Tips:

  • For tender results, choose a sirloin steak that is at least 1 inch thick. Thinner steaks will overcook quickly and become tough.
  • If you don't have a Dutch oven, you can use a large skillet or braising pan. Just make sure that the pan is large enough to hold all of the ingredients comfortably.
  • Sear the steak in a hot skillet before adding it to the Dutch oven. This will help to develop a rich, flavorful crust.
  • Use a variety of vegetables in your casserole. This will add color, flavor, and nutrition to the dish.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different seasonings. A good starting point is to use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Cook the casserole on low heat for at least 1 hour, or until the steak is fall-apart tender.
  • Serve the casserole with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Conclusion:

Sirloin steak casserole is a delicious and easy-to-make meal that is perfect for a weeknight dinner. It is also a great way to use up leftover steak. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a flavorful and satisfying casserole that the whole family will love.
