SLOW COOKER CLAM CHOWDER (NEW ENGLAND STYLE)

Slow Cooker Clam Chowder (New England Style) image

A creamy, very chunky, satisfying chowder. This soup is made in the slow cooker, but no reason why you couldn't cook it stove top following the same sequence. The recipe calls for just clams and juice, but I also toss in 3-4 ounces of fish and/or seafood if it is available...you might have to add a bit of extra liquid if it is too thick. I also use cut up turkey bacon instead of pork bacon for even lower fat. Freezes well.

Tips:

  • Use fresh clams: Fresh clams will give your chowder the best flavor. If you can't find fresh clams, frozen clams are a good substitute.
  • Soak the clams: Soaking the clams in cold water for 30 minutes before cooking will help to remove any grit or sand.
  • Use a good quality clam juice: The clam juice is an important ingredient in chowder, so be sure to use a good quality brand. You can also make your own clam juice by simmering clam shells in water.
  • Don't overcook the clams: Overcooked clams will be tough and chewy. Cook the clams just until they are opaque and tender. Please follow the cooking time in the recipe.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: Chowder is a great way to use up leftover vegetables. Some good choices include potatoes, onions, celery, carrots, and corn.
  • Add some herbs and spices: Herbs and spices can help to add flavor to your chowder. Some good choices include thyme, bay leaf, parsley, and salt and pepper.
  • Serve with crusty bread or crackers: Chowder is a hearty and filling soup, but it can also be served as a light meal with crusty bread or crackers.

Conclusion:

New England clam chowder is a classic American dish that is perfect for a cold winter day. This creamy and flavorful soup is made with fresh clams, vegetables, and herbs. It is a satisfying and delicious meal that is sure to please everyone at your table.
