SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

Simple and Delicious Buttercream Frosting image

I decided on a whim yesterday that I wanted to make cupcakes for Canada Day. I didn't have time to buy frosting before getting ready for the fireworks show, so I ended up making my own with ingredients I already had. I was shocked at how quick and easy this was! This basic vanilla recipe makes enough to cover a dozen cupcakes, but feel free to double it (for cakes), triple it, add food coloring or different flavor extracts. If you find this too sweet, you can add a dash of salt to the milk or the vanilla. Personally I like it sweet, and I used salted butter, so I didn't find it necessary.

SUPER YUMMY BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

Super Yummy Buttercream Frosting image

The title says it all! Super yummy and the longer you whip it the silkier, creamier, and lighter it becomes! I would definitely suggest using good quality ingridients such as using good vanilla, freshly opened powdered sugar, and good quality butter--no margarine here! The flavors really come out in this frosting and it is so easy, simple, and fun!

Time 8m

Yield 1 cake, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 cups powdered sugar
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temprature (a bit over 1/3 a cup)
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 -5 tablespoons half-and-half
1 pinch salt

Steps:

  • Measure and place 3 cups powdered sugar into a medium or large mixing bowl.
  • Add the softened room temprature butter, 2 tsp of vanilla, and begin with 2 T of half and half.
  • Using electric mixer start beating the frosting.
  • Slowly add a bit more half and half as you beat the frosting.
  • I honestly use about 4T of the half and half and I also beat the frosting for at least 3-4 minutes. I highly recommend using the half and half and NOT subbing milk for it -- makes a big difference, imho!
  • If you use salted butter omit the pinch of salt listed in the ingredients.
  • Frosts 1 13x9 or a layer cake if frosted lightly.

Tips:

  • Be sure to use unsalted butter for the frosting, as salted butter can make the frosting too salty.
  • Let the butter and cream cheese come to room temperature before making the frosting. This will help the ingredients blend together more smoothly.
  • If the frosting is too thick, you can add a little bit of milk or cream until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • If the frosting is too thin, you can add a little bit of powdered sugar until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • For a richer frosting, you can use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • For a lighter frosting, you can use low-fat milk or skim milk instead of whole milk.
  • You can add any flavorings you like to the frosting, such as vanilla extract, almond extract, or chocolate syrup.
  • If you are using the frosting to decorate a cake, be sure to chill the cake before frosting it. This will help the frosting set more quickly and prevent it from sliding off the cake.

Conclusion:

Buttercream frosting is a delicious and versatile frosting that can be used to decorate a variety of cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. It is easy to make and can be customized to your own taste. With a little practice, you can make perfect buttercream frosting every time.
