HOT DOG SURPRISE

Hot Dog Surprise image

I first made this one day when I wanted something different then regular hot dogs. I was probably around 9 and didn't know that cooking meat in its own juice makes it fattier, but if you don't care about that it is great. Especially for kids. I have friends who had it when they were younger and still ask me to make it for them when they come over. Tell me what you think!

LOADED BBQ BACON HOT DOGS

Loaded BBQ Bacon Hot Dogs image

This recipe elevates the hot dog by loading it up with a quick red cabbage slaw, slathering it with homemade barbecue sauce and topping it off with crispy onions. My favorite go-to summer sauce is barbecue sauce. There is nothing I love better than making my own, whether for ribs, chicken, or, as in this case, for frankfurters.

Time 25m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 17

4 beef hot dogs
2 cups shredded red cabbage
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
4 slices thick-cut bacon, diced
1/2 onion, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
2 sprigs thyme
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon yellow mustard powder
1 cup crispy fried onions, such as French's
4 hot dog buns

Steps:

  • Bring the dogs to room temperature before cooking so they cook evenly. Prepare a grill or grill pan for medium-high heat. Cook the dogs, turning occasionally, until browned and heated through, 6 to 7 minutes. Keep warm.
  • Meanwhile, mix the cabbage, mayonnaise, vinegar, onion powder and garlic powder together in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  • In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crispy, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside. Keep the bacon fat in the pan.
  • To make the barbecue sauce, add the onion, garlic and thyme to the skillet the bacon cooked in and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes. Stir in the ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, cumin and mustard powder and simmer over low heat for 3 to 4 minutes. Discard the thyme.
  • Grill the hot dog buns until toasted. Top the buns with barbecue sauce, a hot dog, cabbage slaw, bacon and fried onions. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Ensure the hot dogs are good quality and fresh.
  • Use high-quality barbecue sauce for the best flavor.
  • Experiment with different toppings and sides to find your favorite combinations.
  • Don't overcook the hot dogs, or they will become dry and tough.
  • If you are using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before using them to prevent them from burning.
  • Serve the hot dogs hot off the grill for the best flavor and experience.

Conclusion:

With a little creativity and effort, you can create delicious and impressive barbecue hot dogs that will be the hit of your next party or gathering.
