My favorite burgers are 'Surprise Burgers'. The pineapple inside the burger adds a hint of sweetness, while the sauce adds some tanginess! Warning: the added sauce and pineapple makes for a mess with little ones!

Yield Makes 8 burgers

Number Of Ingredients 11

18 oz (about 2 1/2 cups) ground beef
2 teaspoons tomato ketchup
1 tablespoon teriyaki sauce
4 scallions, finely chopped
1 egg, lightly beaten
4 oz Cheddar cheese, cut into 8 small pieces
flour for dusting
vegetable oil for brushing
8 small part-baked bread rolls
tomato salsa for serving
8 romaine lettuce leaves

Steps:

  • Mix together the beef, sauces, scallions, and egg in a large bowl. With damp hands, divide the mixture into 8 balls, then shape into flat patties.
  • Insert a piece of cheese in the center of each patty. Wrap the meat around the cheese and shape into a burger. Place on a lightly floured plate and chill for 30 minutes.
  • Brush the burgers with oil and cook on a cast-iron grill-pan or under a hot broiler for 5-8 minutes on each side.
  • Meanwhile, bake the rolls according to the manufacturer's instructions. Split them in half and top the bottoms with the cooked burgers, tomato salsa, and a lettuce leaf.
  • If you are cooking on a barbecue, place the burgers on a lightly oiled barbecue grill over medium heat, so they do not burn on the outside before being cooked through. Cook for 5-8 minutes on each side.

SURPRISE BURGERS

This recipe came from my father and he always prepares it for my birthday. It can take alot of counter space, however if you don't have it to spare-try doing one burger at a time. Make sure you brown the burgers hot and then significantly reduce the heat to seal in the flavor. The tomato sauce is great with french fries as well!

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lb gr beef
1/3 c dry bread crumbs
1/3 c italian salad dressing
2 Tbsp diced onion
4-6 slice vienna bread, sliced
oregano
1 egg, beaten

Steps:

  • 1. Combine beef, bread crumbs, 1/3 C dressing and onion. Mix lightly. Don't over mix. Shape into patties and grill or broil until brown on both sides. Brush bread with dressing; sprinkle with oregano, and grill or broil until lightly browned on both sides.
  • 2. Top slices of toast with meat patty. Serve with a green salad and sliced tomatoes.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the burgers will be. Look for ground beef that is at least 80% lean, and use fresh vegetables and herbs.
  • Season the beef liberally: Don't be afraid to use plenty of salt and pepper, as well as other spices and herbs. This will help to give the burgers flavor.
  • Don't overmix the beef: Overmixing the beef will make the burgers tough. Just mix it until it is combined.
  • Form the burgers into patties that are about 3/4-inch thick: This will help to ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Cook the burgers over medium heat: This will help to prevent them from burning on the outside and staying raw on the inside.
  • Don't press down on the burgers while they are cooking: This will release the juices and make the burgers dry.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the burgers: The burgers are done when they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the burgers rest for a few minutes before serving: This will help them to retain their juices.

Conclusion:

Surprise burgers are a fun and easy way to add some excitement to your next cookout. With endless possibilities for fillings and toppings, there's sure to be a surprise burger that everyone will enjoy. So get creative and have fun!
