SWEDISH SUGAR COOKIES

Swedish Sugar Cookies image

My favorite cookie of all time! Not too sweet, no frosting. Its an old-fashioned recipe with corn starch to lighten the flour. These are slightly crisp, but still soft ... definitely melt in your mouth!

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 c powdered sugar
1 3/4 c ap flour, sifted
1/2 c corn starch
1 tsp soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c shortening
1/2 c butter
1 egg, well beaten
1 tsp vanilla
decorating sugars or non pariels

Steps:

  • 1. Sift dry ingredients together, work in butter and shortening with a fork as for pastry. Add egg beaten with vanilla.
  • 2. Wrap dough in plastic and let set in refrigerator until firm. (about 20-30 min)
  • 3. Roll into balls and flatten on cookie sheet OR .. these make wonderful cut out cookies. My favorite is the reindeer, stars and bells for Christmas. Sprinkle with decorating sugar BEFORE baking.
  • 4. Bake each sheet at 350 deg for 10 min. A dark pan will give you nice lightly brown cookies.

Tips:

  • Use room temperature butter: This will help the cookies spread evenly and prevent them from being too dry.
  • Chill the dough before baking: This will help the cookies hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing can make the cookies tough.
  • Bake the cookies until the edges are just starting to brown: Overbaking will make the cookies dry.
  • Let the cookies cool completely before frosting: This will help the frosting set properly.

Conclusion:

Swedish sugar cookies are a delicious and festive treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are easy to make and can be decorated in a variety of ways. With their delicate flavor and crispy texture, these cookies are sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them. So next time you're looking for a sweet treat, give Swedish sugar cookies a try!
