SWEET ONION AND MUSHROOM CASSEROLE

Sweet Onion and Mushroom Casserole image

Make and share this Sweet Onion and Mushroom Casserole recipe from Food.com.

Provided by Virginia Chandler

Categories     Vegetable

Time 55m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb vidalia onion, sliced and separated into rings (about 2 large)
4 ounces sliced fresh mushrooms
2 teaspoons butter
1 cup whipping cream
1 large egg
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 teaspoon paprika

Steps:

  • Saute onions and mushrooms in butter until just tender, about 10 minutes.
  • Place onions and mushrooms in a lightly greased 8 inch square baking dish.
  • Whisk together whipping cream, egg and salt.
  • Pour over onion and mushroom mixture.
  • Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.
  • Add cheese and sprinkle with paprika.
  • Bake until cheese melts.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Yellow or white onions are best for this casserole, as they have a milder flavor than red onions. Sweet onions can also be used, but they may make the casserole too sweet for some tastes.
  • Slice the onions thinly: This will help them cook evenly. If the onions are too thick, they may not cook through in the center.
  • Use a large casserole dish: This will ensure that the onions have plenty of room to cook and brown. A 9x13 inch dish is a good size.
  • Cover the casserole with foil: This will help to keep the onions moist as they cook. Remove the foil for the last 15 minutes of cooking to allow the onions to brown.
  • Serve immediately: Sweet onion casserole is best served hot, right out of the oven. It can be served as a side dish or main course.

Conclusion:

Sweet onion casserole is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is a great way to use up extra onions, and it is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
