SPICY HAM SLICE/STEAK

Spicy Ham Slice/Steak image

I'm not a big ham fan but I just LOVE this dish. Easy to do, very forgiving - you can substitute different kinds of juice or soda. Ham steaks freeze well and thaw fast so it's good for a week night. Fairly economical if you get the ham on sale. I love to have it with orange rice where I substitute about a half a cup of OJ for water with plain old white or even brown rice, and a nice green salad. Enjoy!

Time 1h

Yield 2-3 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 slice ham steak
1/2 cup orange juice (apricot or pineapple work well, too, so does Tang!)
1/2 cup ginger ale (or Sprite, 7-Up or a cola drink)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar (I usually use light)
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Steps:

  • Prick ham slice with a fork all over to make holes and slash the edges so it won't curl during baking.
  • Place in baking dish just big enough to hold slice.
  • Mix all other ingredients together well and pour over ham.
  • Marinate at least 30 minutes but can be longer (some times I do it in a baggie overnight).
  • Put in 350* oven, bake for about 30 minutes. Mmmm!

SWEET AND SPICY GLAZED HAM

Sweet and Spicy Glazed Ham image

Zesty mustard and spices balance the sweetness of brown sugar and syrup for a great glaze that tastefully tops baked ham.

Provided by By Betty Crocker Kitchens

Categories     Entree

Time 2h25m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 8

6- to 8-lb fully cooked smoked bone-in gluten-free ham
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup maple-flavored gluten-free syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Dash of ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 325°F. Line shallow roasting pan with foil. Place ham, cut side down, on rack in pan. Insert ovenproof meat thermometer so tip is in thickest part of ham and does not touch bone.
  • Bake uncovered about 1 hour 30 minutes or until thermometer reads 135°F to 140°F. Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix remaining ingredients. Brush over ham during last 30 minutes of baking.
  • Cover ham loosely with foil and let stand 10 to 15 minutes for easier carving.

Tips:

  • To ensure the ham steak is cooked evenly, use a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature. It should read 140°F for medium-rare, 145°F for medium, and 155°F for well done.
  • For a more caramelized glaze, broil the ham steak for an additional 1-2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of preserves or jelly for the glaze. Some popular options include apricot, orange marmalade, and pineapple.
  • If you don't have a broiler pan, you can use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Just be sure to adjust the cooking time accordingly, as the ham steak will cook more quickly.
  • Serve the ham steak immediately, topped with the glaze and any desired garnishes, such as fresh herbs or a sprinkle of brown sugar.

Conclusion:

This sweet and spicy broiled ham steak is a quick and easy meal that's perfect for a weeknight dinner. The ham steak is tender and juicy, and the glaze is flavorful and slightly caramelized. Serve it with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad.
