I have been making this for almost 40 years. The original recipe calls for all ketchup; it was my idea to make that half ketchup and half barbeque sauce. I do love spicy. I have never had a baked bean recipe that was this good and also this easy. Nobody will know you didn't spend all day on it.

Tips:

  • Use dried beans for a more flavorful and economical option. Soaking the beans overnight before cooking helps reduce cooking time and makes them more digestible.
  • Use a variety of beans to create a more interesting flavor and texture. Some good options include kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, and navy beans.
  • Add aromatics like onion, garlic, and celery to the beans for extra flavor. You can also add herbs like thyme, rosemary, and bay leaves.
  • Use a flavorful liquid to cook the beans in, such as chicken broth, beef broth, or tomato juice. This will help infuse the beans with flavor.
  • Simmer the beans on low heat for at least 1 hour, or until they are tender. The longer you simmer them, the more flavorful they will be.
  • Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a little bit of brown sugar or molasses for sweetness.
  • Serve the baked beans hot or warm. They can be served as a main course or a side dish.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are a good source of protein, fiber, and vitamins. They can be made with a variety of ingredients, so you can easily customize them to your own taste. Whether you are looking for a simple side dish or a hearty main course, baked beans are a great option.
