Mexican Salad Aka Frito or Taco Salad image

My favorite taco salad recipe in the world. After my grandma passed I thought I had lost the recipe forever but found it in an old church congregation cookbook that was published in 1980 and it had her recipe in it! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 10

TACO MEAT
1 pkg taco seasoning mix
1 lb lean hamburger
TOPPINGS
1 bag(s) fritos original corn chips, crumbled
2 tomatoes, diced
1 bag(s) shredded lettuce
1 can(s) black olives, sliced
1 pkg cheddar cheese, shredded
1 bottle ranch dressing

Steps:

  • 1. Cook hamburger meat in skillet with taco seasoning pkt and water, according to directions.
  • 2. Prepare all toppings and place in individual bowls on buffet for serving.

Tips:

  • Fresh Ingredients: To achieve the best taste, use fresh and high-quality ingredients whenever possible. Fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices will add vibrant flavors and textures to your taco frito salad.
  • Homemade Taco Seasoning: Instead of store-bought taco seasoning, make your own using a blend of spices like chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. This will give you more control over the flavor and heat level of your salad.
  • Crispy Tortilla Strips: To make crispy tortilla strips, cut corn tortillas into thin strips and bake them in the oven until golden and crispy. You can also use store-bought tortilla chips, but homemade tortilla strips will have a fresher and more authentic flavor.
  • Shredded Cheese: Use a Mexican cheese blend or a combination of cheddar, Monterey Jack, and pepper Jack cheese for a flavorful and gooey topping. Freshly shredded cheese melts better and tastes better than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Layering: Layer the ingredients in your taco frito salad in the following order: lettuce, beans, corn, tomatoes, onions, cheese, tortilla strips, and dressing. This will ensure that each ingredient is evenly distributed and that you get a bit of everything in every bite.
  • Fresh Herbs: Add fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, or green onions to your taco frito salad for an extra layer of flavor and freshness.

Conclusion:

Taco frito salad is a versatile and delicious dish that can be enjoyed as a complete meal or as a side dish. With its combination of fresh vegetables, crispy tortilla strips, flavorful taco meat, and tangy dressing, this salad is sure to be a hit at any gathering. Whether you're looking for a quick and easy weeknight meal or a festive dish for a party, taco frito salad is a great choice that everyone will love.
