THE WORLD'S BEST B L T SANDWICH

The World's Best B L T Sandwich image

So simple, and yet so many subtle differences transform "good" to "world's best." the way a sandwich is assembled is key to how good it tastes. A gread sandwich is never dry (too bready). I pull out and discard all the soft white centers from baguettes, leaving two cano-shaped halves. This hollowed out bread is then packed full and doused with a generous splash of "house" dressing. Closing one of these sandwiches is like shutting an overpacked suitcase!

Time 25m

Yield 2-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 good quality fresh baguette, split lengthwise in half, but not separated, soft centers removed
5 tablespoons hellmann mayonnaise or 5 tablespoons aioli
3 tablespoons basil pesto
10 slices bacon, cooked until crisp
2 large good quality tomatoes or 4 small good quality tomatoes, preferably beefsteak
1 head red leaf lettuce, leaves separated, washed, and dried
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Steps:

  • First make the house dressing, by combining all ingredients in a blender except for the olive oil.
  • With the motor running, very slowly drizzle in the olive oil and mix until it is fully combined.
  • Under a broiler or on a griddle, lightly toast the inside of the baguette.
  • Combine the mayonnaise and pesto.
  • Spread the pesto mayonnaise all over the inside of both halves of the baguette.
  • Lay the bacon along the length of the bottom half of the bread.
  • Lay the tomato slices on top of the bacon and drizzle with the house dressing.

JUICY BLT

Juicy BLT image

The success of a BLT hangs in its balance of salt, acid, lusciousness and crunch. This version is perfect, with a generous swipe of mayonnaise on each slice of toast, followed by a drizzle of olive oil, tomatoes marinated in red wine vinegar and salt, butter lettuce leaves and thick-cut bacon. Squash this closed and eat while the bacon is still warm. BLTs are often associated with summer, but the vinegar here coaxes flavor and brings brightness to hothouse tomatoes, turning it into a sandwich for all seasons.

Time 10m

Yield 2 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 9

8 slices thick-cut, smoked or unsmoked bacon, or 16 slices thin-cut bacon
2 heirloom tomatoes (in summer season, in winter use smaller vine tomatoes)
2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Flaky sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
4 slices good white bread (medium thickness, boule is preferable), heavily toasted
1/4 cup mayonnaise
6 butter lettuce leaves

Steps:

  • Working in batches if necessary, fry bacon in a large skillet over high heat until golden brown, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a large cutting board.
  • While bacon cooks, slice tomato crosswise into thin rounds. Transfer to a plate and marinate with red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt and pepper.
  • Spread toast generously with mayonnaise on one side, follow with remaining 1/2 tablespoon olive oil.
  • Divide the tomatoes with some of their vinegar marinade among 2 slices of toast. Top with the lettuce.
  • Lay the bacon on the remaining slices of toast. Form sandwiches by piling the bacon-topped slices on top of the remaining toasts. Squeeze to close, cut in half and serve immediately.

CLASSIC BLT SANDWICH

Classic BLT Sandwich image

This is a sandwich that I crave a lot. I am just posting it because I couldn't find it posted already on the Zaar...I couldn't believe that! My ex-DH wondered how I make these, so I decided to post it and send him the recipe. Nothing fancy -- just the real, simple, unabridged version. UPDATE: After reading Peg629's review, I have tried it that way, with one slice of toast spread with yellow mustard, and I must say it really, really makes an exceptional BLT! Such a subtle difference, yet genuinely makes a superior BLT, in my opinion! (Thank you Peg629 for that awesome suggestion!)

Time 15m

Yield 4 sandwiches, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 lb bacon (approx. 12 slices)
8 slices white bread
8 leaves iceberg lettuce, fresh and full
8 slices of ripened tomatoes
8 tablespoons Hellmann's mayonnaise

Steps:

  • Cook bacon until crispy, then drain on paper towels.
  • Toast the 8 slices of bread.
  • Spread 1 tablespoon mayo on each slice of toasted bread. (More or less, to taste).
  • Add 1 slice of lettuce to 4 pieces of mayo-spreaded toast.
  • Add 2 slices of tomato on top of lettuce.
  • Arrange 3 slices of bacon evenly on top of tomato. (Break bacon slices in half to fit, if needed.).
  • Add 1 slice of lettuce on top of bacon.
  • Put the remaining 4 pieces of mayo-spreaded toast on top to finish the sandwiches.
  • Enjoy!
  • NOTE: I also like to butter the toast slices before adding the mayo -- higher in fat, but tastier, in my opinion!

Tips:

  • Use ripe tomatoes: Vine-ripened tomatoes are the best choice for BLTs because they have the best flavor. If you can't find vine-ripened tomatoes, look for tomatoes that are firm and have a deep red color.
  • Slice the tomatoes thinly: This will help the tomatoes cook evenly and prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • Use thick-cut bacon: Thick-cut bacon will cook up crispy and flavorful. If you can't find thick-cut bacon, you can use regular bacon, but cook it for a few minutes longer.
  • Cook the bacon until it is crispy: This will help the bacon add flavor and texture to the BLT.
  • Use a good quality mayonnaise: Mayonnaise is the glue that holds the BLT together, so it's important to use a good quality mayonnaise. Look for a mayonnaise that is made with fresh eggs and oil.
  • Toast the bread: Toasting the bread will help it hold up to the other ingredients in the BLT and prevent it from becoming soggy.
  • Assemble the BLT just before serving: This will help prevent the bread from becoming soggy.

Conclusion:

The BLT is a classic American sandwich that is enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a simple sandwich to make, but it can be made even better with a few simple tips. By following the tips in this article, you can make the best BLT sandwich that you have ever tasted.
