Tips for Making the Best Green Bean Casserole:
- Use Fresh Green Beans: Fresh green beans have a better flavor and texture than canned or frozen beans. If you can't find fresh green beans, frozen beans are a good second choice.
- Blanch the Green Beans: Blanching the green beans before adding them to the casserole helps to preserve their color and crunch. To blanch the beans, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until they are bright green. Drain the beans and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
- Make a Creamy Sauce: The creamy sauce is what makes green bean casserole so delicious. To make the sauce, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture is smooth. Slowly whisk in milk and cream. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until it has thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Add Cheese and Crispy Onion Rings: Once the sauce is thickened, stir in grated cheddar cheese and crispy onion rings. The cheese will melt and the onion rings will add a crunchy texture to the casserole.
- Bake the Casserole: Pour the casserole mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
