TOP-SHELF MARGARITAS

Categories     Liqueur     Tequila     Alcoholic     Cocktail Party     Fourth of July     Cinco de Mayo     Lime     Spirit     Summer     Party     Gourmet     Drink

Yield Makes 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lime wedge for coating rims of glasses
Kosher salt for coating rims of glasses
2 cups ice cubes
3/4 cup Grand Marnier
3/4 cup premium, aged, añejo tequila
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
Garnish: 4 lime wedges

Steps:

  • Rub rims of 4 stemmed glasses with lime wedge and dip in salt to lightly coat. In a cocktail shaker, combine remaining ingredients and shake well. Strain drink into glasses and garnish with lime wedges.

Tips:

  • Choose the right tequila. A good tequila will make all the difference in your margarita. Look for a 100% agave tequila with a smooth flavor. Avoid tequilas that are too cheap or have a harsh taste.
  • Use fresh lime juice. Fresh lime juice is essential for a great margarita. Bottled lime juice just doesn't have the same flavor.
  • Make your own simple syrup. Simple syrup is easy to make and it's much better than store-bought syrup. Simply combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then remove from heat and let cool.
  • Use a good orange liqueur. Orange liqueur adds a nice sweetness and complexity to margaritas. Look for a good-quality orange liqueur, such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier.
  • Don't over-shake the margarita. Over-shaking the margarita will make it watery. Shake the margarita just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Serve the margarita immediately. Margaritas are best served immediately after they are made. If you need to make them ahead of time, store them in the refrigerator and shake them again before serving.
