THE ORIGINAL WALDORF SALAD

The Original Waldorf Salad image

"Millions who never visited the Waldorf owe him a debt," The New York Times wrote in 1950, upon Oscar Tschirky's death. Mr. Tschirky, a Swiss immigrant who became known as "Oscar of the Waldorf," is credited with creating this piece of Americana in 1893, a timeless dish whose popularity has spread far past the Waldorf's exclusive doors and into home kitchens. Over time, variations would include blue cheese, raisins and chopped walnuts, which can be added here alongside the celery and apples. But the original is an exercise in simplicity: four ingredients that have lived on for over a century.

Categories     Apple

Time 10m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 1/2 cups apples (do not peel, dice up)
1 cup celery (dice)
1/2 cup walnuts (chopped)

Steps:

  • As soon as apples are diced, mix the mayonnaise into the apples so they will not turn brown.
  • Add celery and nuts; combine well.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients. The better the ingredients, the better the salad will be. Use fresh, crisp apples, celery, and grapes. Walnuts should be fresh and plump, and mayonnaise should be of good quality.
  • Don't overmix the salad. Overmixing will make the salad mushy. Gently toss the ingredients together until they are just combined.
  • Chill the salad before serving. This will help the flavors to meld and the salad will be more refreshing.
  • Serve the salad on a bed of lettuce. This will help to keep the salad from getting soggy.
  • Garnish the salad with additional walnuts, grapes, or celery. This will add a festive touch.
