Tips for Making the Best Warm Apple Topping

  • Choose the right apples. For a classic apple topping, use a firm, tart apple like Granny Smith or Braeburn. These apples will hold their shape and not turn to mush when cooked.
  • Slice the apples evenly. This will help them cook evenly and prevent some pieces from becoming overcooked while others are still undercooked.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pan. This will help to distribute the heat evenly and prevent the apples from burning.
  • Cook the apples over medium heat. This will give them time to soften without burning.
  • Stir the apples frequently. This will help to prevent them from sticking to the pan and burning.
  • Add sugar and spices to taste. Start with a small amount and adjust to your liking.
  • Serve the apple topping warm. It can be served on its own or over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, or yogurt.
