WHISKEY OLD FASHIONED

Whiskey Old Fashioned image

An old-fashioned whiskey cocktail. This is the way we like ours -- fruity with a dash of bitters, soda, and plenty of rocks! Be sure to use a good bourbon. Bottoms up! Enjoy! From eHow. History (taken from about.com): The Old-fashioned is a classic whiskey cocktail that has been served since around 1880 at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky and is (disputedly) the first drink referred to as a cocktail. It is the perfect ideal of what a cocktail should contain: a spirit, a sweet, a bitter, a sour and water. Typically, the Old-fashioned is made with bourbon, however you can experiment with other types of whiskey for an equally excellent drink. Have a light old-fashioned with Canadian whiskey or one that's more sour with a Tennessee whiskey. Club soda is often used to top off this drink, but this is not a traditional method.

Time 5m

Yield 1 cocktail, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2-2 shots bourbon whiskey
1 teaspoon sugar, to taste
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 1/2-2 ounces club soda
2 lemon slices
1 orange slice
1 maraschino cherry
2 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice (from the jar)
ice

Steps:

  • First you will want to grab a cocktail or rocks glass to mix your drink into.
  • Then, place a slice of lemon, orange, and a maraschino cherry into the glass.
  • Pour about two tablespoons of the maraschino cherry juice in with the fruit.
  • Next you will want to add about a spoonful of sugar.
  • Once the sugar is in the glass, pour in some club soda. You will only want to add about 1.5-2 ounces.
  • Next add just a dash of bitters, it's the secret to a good old fashioned.
  • Once you have reached this point in the drink where there is fruit, sugar, club soda, and bitters you are going to want to stir and mesh up your fruit in the bottom of the glass to release and mix the juices.
  • Once you have thoroughly mixed and meshed the juices, fill the rest of the glass with ice.
  • Now it is time to add the whiskey. Pour 1.5 to 2 shots of bourbon whiskey into the glass.
  • Lastly, Stir your drink and ad a lemon slice as a garnish on your glass. Enjoy!

WISCONSIN BRANDY OR WHISKEY OLD-FASHIONED

Wisconsin Brandy or Whiskey Old-Fashioned image

You can use your favorite brandy or whiskey (bourbon). You can also make this sweet or sour to your liking by using 50/50 or 7-Up. I've heard that this is a "regional" drink, because it's not as common outside of our state!

Time 2m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 -3 ounces brandy or 2 -3 ounces whiskey
1 sugar cube (or 1 tsp. super-fine sugar)

3 manzanilla olives, pickled Brussel sprouts or 3 dilly beans

Steps:

  • Place the sugar cube and bitters into an old fashioned glass (8-12 oz. tumbler style glass) and muddle together with a spoon or muddler. (We prefer to use the super-fine sugar because you can stir it all together without muddling.).

  • Add the brandy or whiskey.
  • Top off the glass with either 50/50 soda or 7-up (sour or sweet!).
  • Garnish as described above.

OLD FASHIONED CREAMED CORN WITH WHISKEY

Old Fashioned Creamed Corn With Whiskey image

This recipe is best made with fresh corn that has been rushed from field to kitchen as quickly as possible. For not so fresh corn you may want to add 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar when you're cooking the corn in the butter. The Ontario Harvest Cookbook

Tips:

  • Chill Your Glass: Always chill your glass before making an Old Fashioned. This will help to dilute the whiskey and prevent it from becoming too strong.
  • Use Fresh Citrus: Fresh citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons, are essential for a great Old Fashioned. Choose ripe, juicy fruits and zest them directly into the glass.
  • Don't Over-Muddle: Muddling the citrus and sugar together is necessary to release their flavors, but be careful not to overdo it. Over-muddling can release bitter oils from the citrus peel, which can ruin the drink.
  • Use High-Quality Whiskey: The whiskey is the star of the show in an Old Fashioned, so make sure to use a high-quality bourbon or rye whiskey. Look for a whiskey that is at least 80 proof and has a good flavor profile.
  • Garnish with a Twist: A classic Old Fashioned is garnished with a twist of orange or lemon peel. This adds a refreshing citrus note to the drink.

Conclusion:

The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail that is enjoyed by people all over the world. With its simple ingredients and timeless flavor, it's the perfect drink for any occasion. Whether you're enjoying a night out with friends or relaxing at home, an Old Fashioned is sure to please. So next time you're in the mood for a classic cocktail, give the Old Fashioned a try. You won't be disappointed.
