My boss' wife always makes these for the annual Christmas party. They are to die for. Better than the kind made with marshmallows IMHO. Thanks, Holly! Note: This recipe can be doubled and placed in one large 9x13 dish but the baking thime also needs to be doubled. Added to OMAC (thanks to the freezer tag game) See freezing and cooking directions at the bottom of instructions.

Here are some tips for making Yam Casserole with Pecan-Crumb Topping:

  • Use fresh yams. The best yams for this casserole are firm and have a deep orange color. Look for yams that are about the same size so that they cook evenly.
  • Bake the casserole until the yams are very soft. You can check this by sticking a toothpick or skewer into the center of one of the yams. If it comes out easily, the yams are done.
  • Use light or dark brown sugar. Both light and dark brown sugar will work in this recipe, but dark brown sugar will give the casserole a richer, more caramel-like color and a toffee-like taste.
  • Use roasted pecans. Roaste pecans will be more flavorful than regular pecans. You can roast them in a skillet on the stovetop over medium heat or in a toaster over or on a sheet pan at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 5-10 minutes, until fragrant and golden brown. Don't let them burn.
  • Serve the casserole warm. This casserole is best served warm, right out of the over. You can also serve it cold or at room temperature, but it is best when the flavors have had a chance to meld together, so I recommend making it at least a day in advance.
  • Conclusion:

Yam Casserole with Pecan-Crumb Topping is a delicious and festive side dish for your holiday table. It's easy to make and can be prepared in advance, so you can enjoy it without any last-minutes stress. The sweet and creamy yams are a perfect match for the crunchy texture and nutty favor of the pecan-crumble topping. This casserole is sure to be a hit with everyone at the table.
