Yield 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 tablespoon butter
6 fresh bratwursts
2 medium onions, coarsely chopped
1 medium tart apple, such as granny smith, cored and cut into small chunks
1 lb raw sauerkraut, drained
1 (12 ounce) bottle dark beer
pepper
1 teaspoon caraway seed
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
6 large hot dog buns
gourmet mustard (such as dijon or english)

Steps:

  • Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the butter, then the brats.
  • Brown on all sides, then remove and set aside.
  • Reduce heat to medium.
  • Add the onions and sauté until lightly browned, about 10 minutes, stirring often.
  • Add the apples and toss until lightly golden.
  • Add the sauerkraut, brats and beer.
  • Stir in the caraway, thyme and pepper along with the water.
  • Cover and simmer over medium-low heat until the brats are cooked through and the sauerkraut is tender, about 30 minutes.
  • If necessary, remove the lid and cook further to remove excess moisture.
  • To serve, spread mustard in each roll.
  • Add a brat and top with some sauerkraut.

Overall, I thought these sandwiches were pretty good. I would definitely make them again, but I would make a few changes to the recipe first.

These sandwiches were a bit too greasy for my taste. I think I would have liked them better if I had drained the sauerkraut before adding it to the sandwiches.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but my sandwiches turned out really dry. I think I might have overcooked the bratwurst.

I had some trouble finding bratwurst at my local grocery store, but I was able to find them at a specialty butcher shop. The sandwiches were worth the effort, though! They were delicious.

These sandwiches were a bit bland for my taste. I think I would have liked them better if I had added some more seasoning to the bratwurst.

I made a few substitutions to the recipe and the sandwiches still turned out great. I used turkey bratwurst instead of pork and I added some chopped onion to the sauerkraut. I also served the sandwiches on pretzel buns instead of regular buns.

I followed the recipe exactly and the sandwiches turned out great. The bratwurst was juicy and the sauerkraut was tangy and flavorful. I would definitely recommend this recipe to others.

I'm not a big fan of sauerkraut, but I really enjoyed these sandwiches. The bratwurst was cooked perfectly and the sauerkraut added a nice flavor without being overpowering.

These bratwurst and sauerkraut sandwiches were a hit! The sauerkraut added a nice tanginess that complemented the bratwurst perfectly. I also appreciated the simplicity of the recipe - it only took a few minutes to prepare.
