What can I say but YUM! Crispy crunchy tasty onion rings. I like them as a side with steak or on their own dipped in garlic mayo!

Time 15m

Yield 35-40 rings

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 onions
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
8 ounces plain flour
1 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika
oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Cut the peeled onions into 1/2in slices and separate into rings.
  • Soak the rings in the buttermilk mixed with the cayenne pepper. Leave for up to 1/2 an hour - the longer they soak the better.
  • In another bowl mix together the flour, celery salt, garlic powder, and paprika.
  • Drain the onion rings and drop them in the seasoned flour.
  • Remove and deep-fry a few rings at a time in hot oil until golden and crisp.
  • Season and serve immediately.

These onion rings are a great way to use up leftover onions. I always have a few extra onions lying around and this is a great way to use them up.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but my onion rings turned out soggy and undercooked.

These onion rings were a disaster! The batter didn't stick to the onions and they fell apart in the oil.

The onion rings were good, but they didn't have much flavor. I think I'll add some more spices next time.
