I got this recipe from Favorite Recipes of America - Meats Edition from 1961. These are my family's favorite corn dogs

Provided by Connie Lea

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 45m

Yield 8 corn dogs, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb hot dog
2/3 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Put hot dogs in warm water to keep warm until ready to use. I use all beef hot dogs.
  • Mix dry ingredients and cut in butter.
  • Mix egg and milk together.
  • Stir into dry ingredients until well mixed.
  • Dry hot dogs, roll in a dusting of flour.
  • Dip hot dogs into mixture - it's easiest if you put the mixture into a tall glass.
  • Deep fry in hot oil (375%) until browned.
  • Leftovers may be frozen - reheat in 400 degree oven for 10 minutes.

I'm not a big fan of hot dogs, but these devil dogs were actually pretty good. The bacon and cheese made them a lot more enjoyable.

These devil dogs were a bit too greasy for my taste. I think I would have preferred a baked version.

These devil dogs were a disappointment. They were dry and bland. I won't be making them again.

I've tried many devil dog recipes over the years, but this one is by far the best. The bacon and cheese make them extra special.
