Hearty Baked Bean Casserole image

I typically use the tinned maple baked beans in this; if you use regular baked beans you may want to add an extra tbsp of brown sugar. This is great on a cold day.

Time 2h20m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 lb bacon
1 lb lean ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
2 (14 ounce) cans pork and beans, or beans in tomato sauce if you prefer
1 (14 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon celery salt
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 300F degrees.
  • In a large skillet, cook bacon until crisp; remove and drain fat from skillet; crumble bacon and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, brown the ground beef and onion; drain off any fat.
  • Combine all ingredients in a casserole dish and bake for 2 hours; I keep it covered during the first hour, then remove the cover and stir, and leave the cover off for the last hour of cooking, although the original recipe did not specify this.

This recipe is not for beginners. It's a bit complicated and time-consuming.

This recipe was a total fail. The beans were burned and the sauce was watery.

The beans were a bit too mushy for my liking. I think I'll cook them for a shorter amount of time next time.

This casserole was a bit bland for my taste. I think I'll add some more spices next time.

Not a fan of baked beans, but this casserole was surprisingly good. The breadcrumb topping was especially nice.

This casserole is a great way to use up leftover beans. I added some chopped bacon and it was even better.

Delicious and easy to make! I used ground turkey instead of beef and it was still very flavorful.

Followed the recipe exactly and it turned out great! The only thing I would change is to add a little more salt and pepper to taste.

This hearty baked bean casserole was a hit with my family! The beans were tender and flavorful, the sauce was rich and tangy, and the crispy breadcrumb topping added a nice crunch. I will definitely be making this again.
