Hungarian Goulash image

I have made this Goulash many, many times..it is delicious! Recipe from an old Taste of Home Mag of mine. Mary says her mother was from Hungary, and brought this recipe with her...

Number Of Ingredients 15

4 Tbsp flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 1/2 lb beef top round steak, cut into 1 - inch cubes
1 c coarsely chopped onion
2 tsp butter
2 tsp canola oil
1 c beef broth
2 Tbsp tomato paste
2 clove garlic, minced
2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp dried marjoram
1/4 tsp caraway seeds
1/4 tsp lemon juice
hot cooked noodles

Steps:

  • 1. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, salt and pepper. Add beef cubes and shake to coat.
  • 2. In a large skillet, cook beef and onion in butter and oil until onion is tender. Stir in broth, tomato paste, garlic, paprika, marjoram, caraway seeds and lemon juice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until meat is very tender. Serve over hot noodles.

This goulash was not to my taste. The beef was tough and the sauce was bland. I followed the recipe exactly, but I think I would have preferred to use a different cut of beef. I also think I would have added more spices to the sauce.

This goulash was easy to make and very tasty. I used ground beef instead of stew meat, and it turned out great. I also added some chopped carrots and celery to the pot. The sauce was a little thin, so I added a cornstarch slurry to thicken it up. Ove
