Steps:
- 1. Add cream of tartar and salt to egg whites and beat until stiff. Gradually add 1 C. sugar, beating after each addition. 2. Line a well-buttered 9" pie pan with this mixture. 3. Bake 1 hour at 275 degrees. Turn off oven and let shell cool in the oven. Filling: 4. Place 4 egg yolks in top of double boiler. Beat slightly and add 1/2 c. sugar, lemon juice, and rind. Cook until thick. Cool. 5. Add 1/2 whipped cream. Pour into cooled torte shell. 6. Top with remaining whipped cream. Refrigerate several hours or overnight.
