My mother made this every year for the holidays. I always thought it was some exotic mystery thing, because she kept it wrapped in a damp towel on top of the fridge (I think the towel might have been saturated in whiskey but not sure). Anyway, we were not allowed to touch it; she only gave us a small piece now and then.

Steps:
- 1. Boil sugar and milk until the mixture forms a soft ball in water (or 236º on candy thermometer) Add dates and pecans and cook until a firm ball forms in water (or 240º on thermometer)
- 2. Remove from heat, add butter and let stand until lukewarm Beat with wooden spoon like fudge until mixture begins to thicken Pour onto a damp cloth and roll into a loaf (in damp cloth)
- 3. Place in refrigerator until cold and firm, then slice
