Sounds good and economical too! Be careful not to salt the soup too soon; because ham hocks are so salty, the soup may not need any added salt. And of course, I would add some minced garlic as well. One reviewer from the other site suggested adding some mustard into the stock. (to taste?) Also, her Swedish grandmother mashed 2/3 of the peas only and a third left alone for some texture. Time 3h55m

Yield 2 quarts, 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 tablespoon vegetable oil or 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 celery rib, finely chopped
1 large carrot, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 pinches ground cloves
3 ham hocks
8 -10 cups water
1 lb dried yellow peas, rinsed and picked over
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • In a soup pot or large saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium high heat.
  • Add the onions, celery, and carrot and saute until tender, about 4 minutes. Add the ginger and cloves and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the ham hocks and water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until hocks are beginning to get tender.
  • Add the peas and black pepper and continue to simmer for 2 hours. Remove the ham hocks and set aside to cool slightly.
  • Puree the soup in a blender, or use an immersion blender, working in batches if necessary.
  • Return the soup to the pot and keep warm until ready to serve.
  • If the soup seems too thick, thin with a bit of water.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  • When the salt pork is cool enough to handle, remove any visible fat or gristle and discard. Shred the meat and garnish each serving with some of the meat.

This soup is a great way to warm up on a cold day. It's also very affordable and easy to make. I usually serve it with some bread or crackers.

This soup was bland and flavorless. I followed the recipe exactly, but it just didn't have any taste. I won't be making this again.

This soup is just okay. It's not bad, but it's not great either. I think it needs more seasoning. I'll probably try it again with some different spices.

This soup is a great way to use up leftover ham. I usually make it with a ham bone, but you can also use diced ham. It's a hearty and flavorful soup that's perfect for a cold winter day.

I made this soup for a potluck and it was a huge success. Everyone loved it! I think the key is to use good quality ingredients. I used homemade chicken broth and smoked bacon, and I think that really made a difference.

This soup was a disappointment. The yellow peas were bland and the soup was overall very watery. I won't be making this again.

This soup is a fantastic way to warm up on a cold day. The yellow peas give it a hearty and slightly sweet flavor, and the bacon and onion add a savory depth of flavor. I also added a few carrots and celery for extra vegetables. My family loved it!
