USMC - SOS image

my son was in the Marine Corps - so this is my version on this 'classic dish' a simple recipe of ground beef. Serve this over mashed potatoes, english muffins or toast.

Provided by Jen Smallwood

Categories     Beef

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 lb ground beef, 80/20 mix
1/2 c onion, chopped
4-6 white button mushrooms, sliced
1 1/2 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 c beef broth
1/2 - 3/4 c evaporated milk, can use 2% milk
sea salt & pepper to taste

Steps:

  • 1. Brown the ground beef in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, until meat is no longer pink. Add onion and mushrooms to mixture, saute. Drain excess fat and set aside. Melt the butter or margarine in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Slowly add the flour, stirring constantly, to form a brown roux. Pour in beef broth and milk, mixing well. Add ground beef, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve this dish over mashed potatoes, toast or english muffins.

This was a great recipe! I used ground turkey instead of sausage and it was still delicious. I also added a bit of garlic and paprika for extra flavor.

I'm not a huge fan of cream of mushroom soup, but this recipe was surprisingly good. The sausage and onion really helped to balance out the flavor.

This recipe is a winner! The sauce was creamy and flavorful, and the sausage was perfectly browned. I served it over biscuits and it was a hit with my family.
