Bacon Cheddar Dog Biscuits image

After so many scares of tainted pet food and recently tainted pet treats, I have started to cook my own treats for the mutts. They were already being fed homemade food so treats were the next progression. Since I have the fussiest dogs in the universe, finding treats (and food) recipes is always a challenge but this is one recipe that my guys appear to enjoy!

Time 55m

Yield 40 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 cup rolled oats
6 tablespoons margarine
6 tablespoons bacon fat
1 cup water, boiling
3/4 cup cornmeal
2 teaspoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules (optional)
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1/2 cup parmesan cheese (or Romano)
4 bacon pieces
1 egg, beaten
3 cups whole wheat flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 165'C (325'F).
  • Cook bacon until crisp. Crumble into pieces.
  • In a large bow, combine rolled oats, margarine, bacon fat and boiling water. Mix well and let stand for ten minutes.
  • Stir in the sugar, cornmeal, milk, cheeses, bacon crumbles, egg and 2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules.
  • Mix in the flour, one cup at a time until it becomes a firm dough.
  • Knead dough on floured surface, mixing additional flour as needed to make a smooth and non-sticky dough.
  • Roll out to 1/2" thickness and cut cookies with your favourite cookie cutter.
  • Place on greased cookie sheet and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until cookies become golden brown.
  • Cool and serve.

These biscuits were a bit too cheesy for my taste, but my dog didn't seem to mind.

I made these biscuits for my dog's birthday party and they were a huge success. All the dogs loved them.

These biscuits were perfect for training my dog. They're small enough to break into pieces and they don't crumble all over the place.

I love that this recipe uses whole wheat flour instead of white flour. It makes me feel better about giving these treats to my dog.

These biscuits were a great way to use up some leftover bacon and cheese. They're also a lot cheaper than store-bought dog treats.

These biscuits were too hard for my senior dog to chew, but my puppy had no problem with them. I'll have to find a softer recipe next time.

My dogs were initially hesitant to try these because they're not big on cheddar, but once they did, they were hooked. Now they beg for them every day.

The bacon cheddar flavor was a nice change from the usual peanut butter or chicken dog biscuits.

These were the easiest dog biscuits I've ever made. Only 5 ingredients and they were ready in no time. Will definitely make again.
