CRISPY SESAME TOFU

Crispy Sesame Tofu image

Using a nonstick skillet to make this dish will help the tofu brown evenly with less oil. Wiping the skillet with a paper towel after step 2 will keep the broccoli green.Tofu will take on the taste of whatever food it is cooked with. It is high in protein and is also a very good source of B vitamins and iron.

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 one-pound block firm tofu
1/4 cup sesame seeds
2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
3 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 head (about 1 1/4 pounds, stems and florets) broccoli, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
Salt and fresh ground pepper

Steps:

  • Place block of tofu flat on cutting board; slice lengthwise into 4 equal pieces, then down the middle to make 8 squares. Place on baking sheet lined with three layers of paper towels; cover with three more layers. Place another baking sheet and a weight on top. Let tofu drain until towels are soaked, 5 minutes.
  • Spread the sesame seeds on a plate. Press both sides of each tofu square into sesame seeds. In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon sesame oil over medium heat. Cook tofu, until golden brown, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Add the soy sauce; continue cooking, turning tofu, until it has absorbed all the liquid, about 1 minute. Remove from pan. Wipe skillet with a paper towel.
  • Add broccoli, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, and 1/2 cup water to skillet. Simmer, covered, until broccoli is tender, about 5 minutes. Divide among 4 serving plates; arrange 2 tofu squares on each. Drizzle with remaining tablespoon sesame oil. Serve.

AJI BAKED TOFU WITH BLACK SESAME SEEDS

Aji Baked Tofu With Black Sesame Seeds image

This recipe calls for Aji Sesame Oil-- a sesame oil that has been infused with red chilies and is SPICY. I accidentally bought it at my local asian grocery and am now hooked. You can typically find black sesame seeds at asian grocery stores as well. This tofu goes beautifully over sticky brown rice, crunchy steamed broccoli and a little soy sauce drizzled over the whole shebang. I'm a single lady who loves to chow down, so this recipe was a perfect entree-sized amount for just me, but could probably be split between two people willing to share.

Time 5h5m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 4

5 1/2 cups soymilk
2 tablespoons powdered gelatin
2/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons black sesame paste

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, place 1/2 cup soymilk and sprinkle gelatin over top. Set aside 5 minutes.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine 2 1/2 cups soymilk and sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until milk is hot (but not boiling) and sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat; stir in reserved gelatin mixture until dissolved. Stir in the remaining soymilk and sesame paste. Transfer the mixture to a blender (or use an immersion blender with liquid in pot) and blend until smooth.
  • Set a medium bowl in a bowl of ice water; pour soymilk mixture into the empty bowl. Let the mixture stand, stirring occasionally, until cool, about 45 minutes. Pour milk mixture into glasses. Refrigerate 3 to 4 hours or until firm.

Tips:

  • Choose firm or extra-firm tofu for baking: This will help the tofu hold its shape and not crumble.
  • Press the tofu before baking: This will help remove excess water and make the tofu more flavorful.
  • Marinate the tofu before baking: This will help infuse the tofu with flavor.
  • Bake the tofu at a high temperature: This will help create a crispy outer layer.
  • Serve the tofu with a flavorful sauce or topping: This will help add moisture and flavor to the tofu.
  • Substitute white sesame seeds for black sesame seeds, if desired: Both will add a nutty flavor to the dish.
  • Use a variety of vegetables in the stir-fry: This will add color, texture, and flavor to the dish.
  • Serve the tofu and vegetable stir-fry over rice or noodles: This will make a complete and satisfying meal.

Conclusion:

Aji-baked tofu with black sesame seeds is a delicious and easy-to-make vegan dish. The tofu is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the black sesame seeds add a nutty flavor. This dish can be served as an appetizer, main course, or side dish. It is also a great way to use up leftover tofu. With a few simple tips, you can make this dish even more flavorful and enjoyable.
