1 cup Amish Friendship Bread Starter
3 eggs
1 cup oil
½ cup milk
1 cup sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
2 cups flour
1 medium yellow onion (chopped (¼ reserved for topping))
garlic salt to dust

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325° F (165° C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, add ingredients as listed.
  • Grease two large loaf pans.
  • Dust the greased pans with a mixture of ½ cup sugar and ½ teaspoon garlic salt. If you like it salty, omit sugar and use enough garlic salt to dust.
  • Pour the batter evenly into loaf or cake pans and sprinkle the remaining onions on the top.
  • Bake for one hour or until the bread loosens evenly from the sides and a toothpick inserted in the center of the bread comes out clean.

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 ½ cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons shortening
1 tablespoon minced onions
½ teaspoon dried oregano
3 ½ cups bread flour
½ onion
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir salt, shortening, minced onions, oregano and 2 cups bread flour into yeast mixture. Stir in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1-1/2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
5 large eggs, room temperature
3/4 cup 2% milk
3/4 cup sour cream

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook onions in 1/2 cup butter over low heat for 10 minutes. Stir in the poppy seeds, salt, paprika and pepper; cook until onions are golden brown, stirring occasionally.
