  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a flat dish, crack eggs and add milk, vanilla extract and cinnamon. Whisk until well combined then lay challah slices in mixture to coat and absorb it all, turning occasionally.
  • Set a 10-inch skillet, seasoned cast iron if you have, over medium heat. Add the butter and 1 cup sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar has melted and caramelized, about 8 minutes. While the sugar is melting, peel apples, core and cut into halves. Remove from heat and gently whisk in the heavy cream. Sprinkle in the pecans, dried cranberries and gently press in the apple halves so there is a flat surface. Lay soaked slices of challah over the top so it is completely covered - you should be able to arrange the large slices and small slices so there are no gaps. Sprinkle the top with some brown sugar and place into the preheated oven. Bake in the middle of the oven for 40 to 45 minutes until the top is golden and puffy.
  • When done, allow to cool for 2 to 3 minutes then invert onto a large plate. Dust with confectioners' sugar, if desired, and serve.

Number Of Ingredients 9

6 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Ground cinnamon
6 slices bread
2 tablespoons butter, plus more for serving
3 apples, peeled and sliced
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup maple syrup

Steps:

  • Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, and a pinch of ground cinnamon in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Add the bread in a single layer, turning until all the egg is absorbed.
  • Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter, and add apples, stirring to coat until starting to caramelize. Add the water, cooking until water has evaporated and apples are tender, about 4 minutes.
  • Pour in the maple syrup and a dash of ground cinnamon; simmer for a minute to combine.
  • In a large, heated nonstick skillet, melt about 1 tablespoon butter and saute the soaked bread until golden brown on each side, about 4 minutes. Place French toast on a plate and top with apple-maple mixture, plus more butter if you'd like!

Tips:

  • Choose the right bread: For a classic apple toast, use a thick-sliced, hearty bread that can hold up to the toppings. Some good options include sourdough, whole wheat, or French bread.
  • Use fresh, crisp apples: The type of apple you use will make a big difference in the flavor of your toast. Look for apples that are firm and have a sweet-tart flavor, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn.
  • Slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: When cooking the apples, make sure to leave enough space between them so that they can brown properly.
  • Use a combination of spices: To add flavor to your apple toast, try using a combination of spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  • Serve immediately: Apple toast is best served immediately after it is made. The apples will start to wilt if they sit for too long.

Conclusion:

Apple toast is a delicious and versatile breakfast or snack that can be made with a variety of different toppings. By following the tips above, you can make perfect apple toast every time. Whether you like it simple or loaded with toppings, apple toast is a great way to enjoy the fresh flavors of fall.
