WALDORF SALAD

Waldorf Salad image

This is the original Waldorf Salad recipe which I clipped out of the newspaper several years ago. My mother made this salad often--it must have been a favorite of hers also. Newer versions have left out some of the ingredients which add variety in texture and taste. It's a classic American salad which was developed by the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Tips for Making the Best Waldorf Salad:

  • Use crisp, fresh apples. Granny Smith apples are a classic choice for Waldorf salad, but you can use any type of crisp, tart apple you like.
  • Dice the apples into small pieces. This will help them to distribute evenly throughout the salad and make it easier to eat.
  • Add a variety of nuts. Walnuts and pecans are traditional, but you can also use almonds, cashews, or pistachios.
  • Use fresh celery and carrots. These vegetables add crunch and freshness to the salad.
  • Don't skimp on the mayonnaise. Mayonnaise is what binds all of the ingredients together and gives the salad its creamy texture.
  • Season the salad to taste. Salt and pepper are essential, but you can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper or curry powder for a little extra flavor.
  • Serve the salad chilled. Waldorf salad is best served cold, so be sure to chill it for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Conclusion:

Waldorf salad is a classic for a reason. It's a delicious, refreshing, and easy-to-make salad that's perfect for any occasion. With its sweet apples, crunchy nuts, and creamy mayonnaise dressing, Waldorf salad is sure to please everyone at your table.
