HOT & MELTY OVEN BAKED HAM & SWISS SANDWICHES

Hot & Melty Oven Baked Ham & Swiss Sandwiches image

I made 36 of these for our neighborhood Holiday House Hop Party. They were a huge hit last year so I searched for a recipe to present again this year. I bought a good deli ham and had it shaved, I think it's easier to bit into and enjoy. You can use as much ham & cheese as you like. If it fits on the buns, go for it! The buttery mustard sauce is amazing! I do not add the poppy seeds, they look pretty but nobody likes speckled teeth! I tripled the recipe but only doubled the sauce and still had a tiny bit left over. Go ahead and slather it all on, these are yummy! Inspired by recipe from Bunsinmyoven.com

AWESOME SWISS AND MOZZARELLA HAM HOAGIES

Awesome Swiss and Mozzarella Ham Hoagies image

We used to love to go to this old family owned drive-in restaurant called Romano's. These hoagies were incredible! This is my version of them. They closed years ago unfortunately. :(

Provided by Wildflour

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 40m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 hoagie rolls, split, bottom half hollowed out leaving a 1/2 shell
4 tablespoons mayonnaise, more if needed
16 slices virginia-baked ham, boiled ham (thin slices) or 16 slices leftover ham (thin slices)
1/2 cup Italian salad dressing, more if needed
1 cup shredded swiss cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
4 tablespoons butter
2 cups shredded lettuce
salt and pepper
12 slices tomatoes (very thin slices)

Steps:

  • Spread inside bottoms of rolls with mayo. Toss ham slices in dressing.
  • Pile ham inside rolls, don't lay flat.
  • Mix cheeses together, pile on top of ham. Wrap each in foil loosely, sealing top of foil closed.
  • Bake in 350º oven for 20 minutes or til heated through and cheese is melted.
  • Remove from oven.
  • Spread top rolls with butter and broil til butter is melted and tops are lightly toasted.
  • While tops are toasting, open foil and top hoagies with lettuce tossed in a little salt and pepper, then top with tomato slices.
  • Do this fairly quickly so your tops don't burn under the broiler!
  • Then place on tops and enjoy!
  • *You can spread tops with additional mayo if desired.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham: Select a bone-in ham for a more flavorful dish. If using a boneless ham, add a ham bone to the mushroom sauce for extra flavor.
  • Use a variety of mushrooms: This will give the sauce a more complex flavor. Some good options include shiitake, cremini, and oyster mushrooms.
  • Sauté the mushrooms properly: Cook them over medium-high heat until they are browned and slightly crispy. This will help to bring out their flavor.
  • Use a good quality Swiss cheese: This will make a big difference in the overall flavor of the dish. Look for a cheese that is nutty and slightly sweet.
  • Don't overcook the ham: Overcooked ham is tough and dry. Cook it to an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a slightly pink center, or 160 degrees Fahrenheit for a fully cooked ham.
  • Let the ham rest before slicing: This will help the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it more tender and flavorful.

Conclusion:

Baked ham with Swiss and mushroom sauce is a classic dish that is perfect for any special occasion. It's easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With a few simple tips, you can make sure your baked ham is moist, flavorful, and delicious. So next time you're looking for a special meal to serve, give this recipe a try.
