SOUTHWEST TURKEY BURGERS

Southwest Turkey Burgers image

Most of the turkey burgers that I have had were overcooked and flavorless. This recipe was inspired by some friends of ours that put a Southwest spin on the burger. With a few tweaks these Southwest turkey burgers have become a staple recipe in our house. The patty is flavorful and plays well with some creamy guacamole and spicy salsa.

Time 25m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 16

2 pounds ground turkey
2 large eggs, beaten
¼ cup diced yellow onion
¼ cup plain dry bread crumbs
4 tablespoons garlic-infused olive oil, divided
3 tablespoons seeded and diced fresh jalapeno peppers
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
8 each whole wheat hamburger buns, toasted
½ cup guacamole
½ cup salsa

Steps:

  • Combine turkey, eggs, onion, bread crumbs, 2 tablespoons oil, jalapenos, Worcestershire, mustard, paprika, chili powder, and cumin in a bowl. Form into 8 patties. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
  • Heat remaining olive oil in a saute pan over medium to medium-high heat. Place patties in the hot pan and cover partially to help retain moisture, but not so much that the patties braise (boil). Cook until browned and halfway cooked through, about 4 minutes. Continue to cook until no longer pink and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reads 165 degrees F (74 degrees C), about 3 minutes more.
  • Serve patties on toasted buns with guacamole and salsa.

Time 27m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 ½ pounds extra lean ground beef
4 cloves roasted garlic, chopped
1 pinch garlic pepper
1 pinch lemon pepper
1 pinch Cajun seasoning
4 slices sweet onion, 1/2 inch thick
4 large Hawaiian sweet rolls
4 slices American cheese
4 slices smoked Edam cheese
4 green leaf lettuce leaves
3 roma (plum) tomatoes, sliced
8 dill pickle slices
1 teaspoon Creole mustard
1 tablespoon creamy salad dressing, e.g. Miracle Whip ™
1 tablespoon ketchup

Steps:

  • Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat.
  • Mix together the ground beef and roasted garlic. Form the mixture into four balls, and flatten into patties about 3/4 inch thick. Sprinkle the patties with garlic pepper, lemon salt, and Cajun seasoning.
  • Lightly oil the grilling surface. Place onions on the grill, and toast on both sides. Place beef patties on the grill, and set the onions on top of them. Grill for about 5 minutes on each side, or to desired doneness. If you're lucky (or trashy) enough to still have a coffee can of grease on your stove, brush both sides of the Hawaiian rolls, then toast them on the grill.
  • To assemble, place the patties on buns, and top with slices of American and Edam cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and your choice of condiments such as ketchup, Creole mustard, and salad dressing. These listed are some of mine.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ground turkey: Look for ground turkey that is made from fresh, never-frozen turkey. This will ensure that your burgers are juicy and flavorful.
  • Season the ground turkey well: Don't be afraid to add plenty of seasonings to your ground turkey. This will help to enhance the flavor of the burgers.
  • Don't overmix the ground turkey: Overmixing the ground turkey will make the burgers tough. Mix the turkey just until it is combined.
  • Form the burgers gently: When forming the burgers, be gentle and don't pack them too tightly. This will also help to prevent the burgers from becoming tough.
  • Cook the burgers over medium heat: Cooking the burgers over medium heat will help to prevent them from drying out. Cook the burgers for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are cooked through.
  • Top the burgers with your favorite toppings: Once the burgers are cooked, top them with your favorite toppings. This could include cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, or anything else you like.

Conclusion:

Bayou turkey burgers are a delicious and easy-to-make meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you are looking for a quick and easy weeknight meal or a fun and festive party food, bayou turkey burgers are sure to please.
